Oracle announced the availability of the Oracle MySQL Database Service with integrated MySQL Analytics Engine, optimized for and exclusively available in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). This is the only MySQL service that provides customers with a single, unified platform for Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) and Online Analytics Processing (OLAP) workloads to build and run modern applications faster and more securely. The MySQL Analytics Engine, developed for the MySQL Database Service by Oracle’s MySQL engineering team in collaboration with Oracle Labs, is a new, in-memory analytic accelerator that scales to thousands of cores, supports real-time analytics, and at least 2 times faster and up to 66 percent less expensive than Amazon Redshift. Get started here.

MySQL is recognized as the most popular database on the planet1 and is used by the world’s largest social networks, ecommerce companies, and banks, as well as the most innovative manufacturers and high-tech companies. While MySQL databases are commonly used for OLTP, most enterprises that run MySQL databases also need to run analytics on data stored in MySQL databases. Until today, organizations had to extract, transform, and load (ETL) their data into a separate analytics database – a costly and complex process that reduces performance, security, and data quality, delaying the deployment of new applications.

The Oracle MySQL Database Service with the MySQL Analytics Engine provides a fully managed scale-out service for analytics and OLTP and is the only service that enables customers to run OLTP and OLAP workloads directly from their MySQL database. When users spin up the service, data from the MySQL database is populated in the memory of the analytics engine, eliminating the need to ETL data to specialized databases. The service works seamlessly with any MySQL-compatible tools and applications and will automatically route queries to the MySQL Analytics Engine, dramatically improving performance. Any changes to the MySQL database are automatically populated into the analytics engine in real-time. This simplifies application development, saves time, enables real-time queries, decreases costs, and improves security. The new service is available across all Oracle Cloud commercial regions and will be available in Oracle Dedicated Region Cloud@Customer.

“MySQL is the most popular database among developers and is widely used by companies across industries. But, until today, MySQL users have been forced to move their data into separate incompatible data warehouses for analytics leading to higher costs and delayed answers,” said Edward Screven, chief corporate architect, Oracle. “With the MySQL engineering team’s latest innovations, Oracle is the only provider that offers developers and database administrators a single, unified platform that can easily run high performance real-time analytics against their MySQL database without requiring any change to their MySQL applications – making Oracle Cloud Infrastructure the best place to run MySQL applications.”

The MySQL Database Service is a fully managed database cloud service that enables customers to provision MySQL databases in minutes and focus on development, without having to worry about time-consuming database administration tasks such as scaling, backup, OS patching, and server maintenance. The MySQL Database Service is the only public cloud service built on MySQL Enterprise Edition to help ensure the highest reliability and security. The new service is completely compatible with on-premises MySQL, making it easy for customers to move existing MySQL applications and workloads to Oracle Cloud. As a result, developers always have access to the latest MySQL features, and can leverage native services in OCI using technologies such as Kubernetes and Docker.

The MySQL Analytics Engine is architected for massive scale and performance, accelerating MySQL performance by 400 times for analytic queries. The analytics engine offers in-memory hybrid columnar processing, massive inter- and intra-node parallelism optimized for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and distributed query processing algorithms while relieving DBAs of time-consuming ETL tasks.

“I had never considered MySQL for data warehousing – until now. The Oracle MySQL Database Service with its integrated Analytics Engine can now be used for both transaction processing and analytics,” said Richard Winter, CEO of WinterCorp. “With its in-memory parallel architecture, the MySQL Database Service will now process queries much faster, enabling a new generation of open source, analytic database applications.”

Simplicity, Performance, and Cost Savings Separate Oracle MySQL Database Service from the Pack

“At Siemens Healthineers we use several MySQL databases. During our tests of the new MySQL Database Service Analytics Engine we discovered astonishing performance improvements, reducing query times from hours to literally seconds in cases of non-index based queries,” said Dr. Jens Uecker, senior key expert, Siemens Healthineers. “This enables us to expand service to new levels and opens the door to many more analytics-based capabilities, all while maintaining a single, seamless database platform.”

“The MySQL Database Service Analytics Engine surprised us by improving query performance significantly without modifying any queries or using any ETL tools,” said Yoshihiko Goto, Service Front Team, Server Infrastructure Group, DMM.com LLC. “This fully managed analytics platform makes it possible for us to focus more on innovating e-commerce business services.”

Kenichi Sasaki, SRE team of Japan at Mercari, Inc. said, “The performance of the MySQL Database Service Analytics Engine is over 20 times faster than the analytics service of one of the largest cloud vendors, and accelerates our analytics workload by 45,000 times compared to MySQL on-premises.”

  • OCI customers can now run sophisticated analytics directly against their operational MySQL databases, eliminating the need for complex and expensive data integration with a separate analytics database
  • MySQL Analytics Engine is an in-memory analytics accelerator that automatically scales out to thousands of OCI cores and at least 2X faster and up to 66% less expensive than Amazon Redshift
  • Unified operational and analytics MySQL service makes OCI the best place to build and run MySQL applications

Google Cloud announced its serverless Database Migration Service (DMS) is available in Preview, enabling customers to migrate MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server databases to Cloud SQL from on-premises environments or other clouds. For early customers like Samsung Electronics, DMS makes migrating their databases easy, cost-effective, and reliable.

Gartner predicts that by 2023, 75% of all databases will be on a cloud platform1. However, commonly used database migration offerings are costly, hard to set up, and error-prone. They frequently require additional provisioning for migration compute resources, introduce new complexities during the migration process, and can’t guarantee data fidelity.

Google Cloud’s differentiated approach

DMS is designed to be reliable and simplifies network connectivity. The serverless offering eliminates the typical need to provision and pay for migration-specific compute resources. The easy-to-use, guided experience eliminates the need for customers to read through lengthy documentation in order to set up their network. Customers can take advantage of its native replication capabilities and avoid incompatibilities between source and destination, especially for metadata operations.

“As organizations modernize their infrastructure and advance their digital transformation strategies, migrating mission-critical operational databases that power their business success is crucial,” said Andi Gutmans, General Manager, and Vice President, Engineering, Databases at Google Cloud. “Database migration is a complex process for most businesses. With Database Migration Service, we’re delivering a simplified and highly compatible product experience so that, no matter where our customers are starting from, they have an easy, and secure way to migrate their databases to Cloud SQL.”

DMS is the fast track to Cloud SQL

Cloud SQL is one of the fastest-growing services at Google Cloud, powering mission-critical workloads at some of the largest enterprises across the globe.2 DMS accelerates migrations from legacy on-premises and other database cloud services to Cloud SQL, where enterprises can take advantage of unique integrations with Google Kubernetes Engine for development and BigQuery for analytics. For native like-to-like migrations to Cloud SQL, DMS is available at no additional charge.

DMS sets a new standard for accelerating cloud migrations

  • Simple. From preparing the databases, to configuring secure connectivity, to validating the migration setup, DMS provides a guided, integrated experience. Customers benefit from a fast and repeatable setup, with fewer surprises.
  • Serverless. DMS is unique as a serverless migration service, eliminating the manual customer hassle of provisioning, managing, or monitoring migration-specific resources. Automatic scaling means fast data replication, minimizing downtime for production workloads.
  • Secure and compatible. DMS protects sensitive data during migration with support for multiple secure, private connectivity configurations. DMS leverages native database replication capabilities to ensure compatibility, reliability, and high fidelity.

“HCL customers across every industry are moving to the cloud to be more agile, secure and scalable, and looking for a trusted partner to deliver an end-to-end experience to migrate their production workloads without disrupting their business,” said Sanjay Singh, Vice President & Head of HCL Google Cloud Ecosystem at HCL. “Database Migration Service accelerates their migration path to help them unlock the benefits of Google Cloud databases.”

“We have seen an acceleration in migrations across the board, including a wave of customers leaving AWS for other cloud service providers. This makes it vital for providers like Google Cloud to provide tools to streamline these migrations,” says John Santaferraro, Research Director for Data and Analytics at Enterprise Management Associates (EMA). “Google Cloud’s Database Migration Service takes an innovative, serverless and user-first approach to eliminate some of the complexity and risk normally associated with production database migrations. This new offering is a strong signal that Google Cloud is committed to helping their customers achieve success easily, securely, and reliably.”

Availability and Getting Started

DMS, now in Preview, supports migrations of self-hosted MySQL databases, either on-premises or in the cloud, as well as managed databases from other clouds, to Cloud SQL for MySQL. Customers can start migrating with DMS at no additional charge for native like-to-like migrations to Cloud SQL. Support for PostgreSQL is currently available for limited customers in Preview, with SQL Server coming soon (request access for both).

Quest Software has announced enhancements to two pillar solutions — QoreStor and SharePlex — that enable IT and database management teams to address ever changing enterprise challenges pertaining to data backup, recovery and database management across hybrid cloud environments. The enhancements to QoreStor and SharePlex are the first from the newly unified Quest Information Systems Management (ISM) business which helps customers manage and monitor their data, while providing critical protection for that data and the people who have access to it.

Quest is able to help perform these comprehensive functions by encompassing solutions across the data protection, information management and unified endpoint management portfolios. The new business focuses on driving innovation that provides the heart of the organization—IT systems, applications and data—with all critical proactive management and monitoring, offering automation and data resiliency while enabling application availability to help organizations tackle their toughest IT challenges.

Quest ISM offerings are emerging as crucial to IT and database administrators as they continually face amorphous computing environments, the need for rapid machine, application and user deployment, and a seemingly overwhelming number of security threats. For example, The New York Times has reported that there have been more than a thousand ransomware attacks on American cities, counties and hospitals over the past 18 months. Data protection and IT administration practices are vital to protect enterprises against ransomware and a host of other security incidents, as well as to support numerous strategic IT initiatives.

“With the strong headwinds organizations continue to battle around changes to business environments and new security threats, it’s now more critical than ever that they understand where their data is, properly manage it, protect that data and the users that have access to it, all through proven, comprehensive solutions that drive business continuity,” said Chris DeBiase, chief operating officer at Quest Software. “Quest Software has dedicated over three decades to delivering solutions that enable management of databases and IT systems that are core to every organization’s business. The release of QoreStor 7.0 and SharePlex 10.0 underscores the Quest ISM business focus and its investment in several core solution areas targeted at making an organization’s enterprise IT easier to manage and more capable.”

Key Quest ISM product enhancements made to QoreStor and SharePlex to support enterprise IT and database administrators include:

  • Version 7.0 of QoreStor takes the solution’s ability to leverage the cloud more easily and extensively than before by adding “Object Direct,” which enables customers to utilize object storage for the solution’s main data repository, providing de-duplication using native cloud storage for a more cost-effective option for secondary storage needs. With another new feature called “Archive Tier,” the solution now also allows backup data to be sent from a QoreStor instance directly to a lower cost “cold” cloud storage solution, such as AWS Glacier. Additionally, a new connection interface “Object”, enables cloud-based solutions that leverage an S3 based connection to store data to send it directly to a QoreStor instance, combined with “Object Direct” QoreStor 7.0 adds true cloud storage de-duplication for cloud native backup solutions.
  • New features in SharePlex bolster the solution’s role as a safety net, supporting Oracle database availability and data resiliency to drive Oracle availability where the business needs it most. The latest version provides more flexible ways to drive value from Oracle data while reducing cost by allowing migration to Oracle Database 19c, on-prem or in the cloud, and can move Oracle data to Kafka for superior data streaming or SQL Server for cost-effective offload reporting in near real time. Version 10.0 also extends SharePlex support for Oracle Database 19c on AIX, AWS RDS, Exadata, Windows and Solaris.

“While the job of  IT teams has never been harder, they are also excited about the potential of cloud computing and other transforming technologies that will create new efficiencies for all IT operations, and our new product enhancements today capitalize on that potential,” said Adrian Moir, Technology Strategist at Quest Software. “QoreStor and SharePlex solution updates help customers address the challenges they are facing now, and feel confident their data is where it needs to be and is fully managed, monitored and protected.”
