At VMware Explore Barcelona, IGEL announced that IGEL OS 12 Single Sign-On (SSO) now seamlessly supports VMware Identity Services for authentication to VMware Workspace ONE Access. This enhancement streamlines the process of securely accessing digital workspaces, cloud applications, and data. With IGEL’s new support for VMware Identity Services, user experiences are enhanced, leading to improved productivity and more robust privilege access control, all managed through a centralized VMware Workspace ONE interface.

IGEL has integrated the advanced IGEL OS 12 SSO technology with VMware Identity Services enabling users to logon once to VMware Horizon using a SCIM 2.0-based cloud identity solution including Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory), Okta or other SCIM 2.0-compliant technology. Secure access and policy control for the IGEL OS-powered endpoints is centralized through the VMware Workspace ONE unified endpoint management solution delivering granular privilege management in a single view. Once logged in, further user authentication is not required to access a virtual desktop, published cloud desktop or application, simplifying the user experience and securing critical business data.

“In an era where cyberthreats are ever present, delivering security at the endpoint is one of IT’s top priorities,” said Matthias Haas, Chief Technology Officer, IGEL. “IGEL is addressing this priority with the advanced SSO technology users need to accelerate productivity while minimizing the endpoint attack surface. Working closely with VMware, IGEL has integrated our advanced SSO technology with VMware Identity Services to streamline the user experience while delivering the secure privileged access organizations require to protect their critical apps and data. It’s one more way IGEL is adding value to VMware users.”

“Our longstanding partnership with IGEL continues to deliver valuable innovations for our mutual customers,” said Terry Vaughn, Director Global EUC Business Development, VMware. “Our integration between IGEL OS, Imprivata and VMware, for example, gives healthcare customers the rapid time-to-value they need for secure, agile computing at the endpoint. Now, our joint integration of SSO technology delivers a single, unified solution to protecting our customers’ critical end user computing infrastructure so users can work securely and effortlessly from anywhere.”

The VMware Identity Services support will be generally available this quarter in the latest release of IGEL OS 12, as part of the IGEL COSMOS secure endpoint platform. Using the new feature, users are able to boot to a VMware authentication screen which will authenticate them with session tokens that enable secure access to the apps and services that the VMware environment supports. Once authenticated, users will be able to access a VMware Workspace ONE app catalog and launch directly into VMware Horizon Cloud, as well as any other authorized applications, without any additional login. Find out more information on how VMware and IGEL can provide all the tools users need to be productive – from anywhere – while reducing cost and increasing security with IGEL OS 12 Single Sign-On (SSO).

In conjunction with Confidential Computing Summit 2023, VMware, Inc. announced that it is joining forces with AMD, Samsung, and members of the RISC-V Keystone community to simplify the development and operations of confidential computing applications. These industry and community leaders will work together to ease the transition by collaborating on and contributing to the open source Certifier Framework for Confidential Computing project.

Ecosystem Support Builds for Certifier Framework for Confidential Computing

To help democratize confidential computing, VMware researched, developed and open sourced the developer-focused Certifier Framework for Confidential Computing project. By standardizing on an easy-to-use, platform-independent API for creating and operating confidential computing applications, AMD, Samsung and VMware aim to address a significant barrier to its adoption.

Confidential computing is based on an emerging processor concept called a “trusted execution environment” that maintains the confidentiality and integrity of programs and data even when workloads are deployed in the cloud or infrastructure (such as the edge) that may be operated by others. Uniform security protections based on confidential computing are expected to be increasingly important in the context of multi-cloud deployments. Also, in the context of emerging workloads like machine learning, confidential computing can play a special role in protecting the intellectual property and proprietary data related to the foundation models and code, proprietary model derivatives, and private training data. Although this concept is an enormous advancement for security and privacy, like many hardware features, it will not be widely adopted until it becomes easier to develop applications in the new paradigm.

The Certifier Framework vastly simplifies the development of more secure cloud workloads, secret-keeping services, and privacy-preserving applications including an emerging class of machine learning and “data economy” workloads that are based on sensitive data and models aggregated from multiple sources. The framework provides platform-independent support for specifying and enforcing trust policies that can better secure workloads across on-prem and third-party infrastructure, including the telco edge, multi-cloud environments, and sovereign clouds. By collectively advancing and contributing to the open source Certifier Framework, the companies and community members aim to effectively standardize on a set of developer APIs that will benefit the entire industry by accelerating the adoption of confidential computing as it becomes available in the x86, Arm, and RISC-V ecosystems.

“Confidential Computing has the potential to secure workloads no matter where they run including in multi-cloud and edge settings,” said Kit Colbert, CTO, VMware. “The challenge has been to help customers adopt and implement the standard with ease. The collective efforts of the growing ecosystem of contributors to Certifier Framework will help bring those benefits to bear to ISVs, enterprise customers, and Sovereign Cloud providers—enabling them to use this emerging technology more easily and effectively.”

VMware at the Confidential Computing Summit 2023

The certifier’s capabilities, representative of VMware’s commitment to the future of multi-cloud security, are being highlighted at today’s Confidential Computing Summit. VMware along with other contributors to the Certifier Framework project will show demos of client/cloud confidential computing in compelling machine learning use cases. In particular, the demos will showcase “universal” client-cloud trust management across heterogeneous TEEs including AMD Secure Encrypted Virtualization-Secure Nested Paging (SEV-SNP), SGX, CCA, and RISC-V.

“AMD is a pioneer of advanced hardware-based security features such as AMD Infinity Guard, with built-in capabilities like Secure Encrypted Virtualization (SEV), in our EPYC data center processors,” said Raghu Nambiar, corporate vice president, Data Center Ecosystems and Solutions, AMD. “Collaborating with industry partners, like VMware, is critical for accelerating adoption of confidential computing and securing workloads in the cloud. No matter the size or technical sophistication of an organization, or where a workload is deployed, the Certifier Framework will help more customers realize the benefits of confidential computing.”

“Samsung is committed to extending confidential computing to endpoints through their Islet interface to the Arm CCA architecture,” said Yong Ho Hwang, VP and Head of Security & Privacy Team at Samsung Electronics. “We are pleased to be a supporter of the Certifier Framework and share the common goal of accelerating the adoption of confidential computing through a developer-friendly API for confidential computing trust management.”

“Keystone brings the benefits of open source to the confidential computing hardware community,” said Krste Asanovic, Professor, Computer Science Division, EECS Department, University of California, Berkeley. “We are pleased to leverage the Certifier Framework to help confidential computing developers maintain choice over platform selection as our capabilities evolve.”

In the wake of the global pandemic, healthcare providers are expanding their telehealth offerings and increasingly opting to host these and other remote patient monitoring and analytics workloads in the cloud. To help ease the transition to the cloud, VMware announced GE Healthcare will leverage VMware SD-WAN, now part of VMware SASE, to seamlessly deliver cloud-based services to GE Healthcare customers.

“GE Healthcare offers a suite of precision healthcare applications that are both on-premises and cloud-based. OnWatch Network Edge provides an easy way to deploy these large-scale integrations quickly and more securely. VMware’s SD-WAN technology enables reliable deployment of latency-sensitive and data-intensive applications”

“Patient monitoring and diagnostic data analysis are moving from the datacenter to the edge. With this shift, healthcare providers and their technology partners require a software-defined, high-performing, secure network,” said Sanjay Uppal, senior vice president and general manager, Service Provider and Edge, VMware. “VMware SD-WAN provides this network overlay to prioritize and move high-fidelity, latency-sensitive data to the cloud and between edge locations. Leveraging VMware SD-WAN enables GE Healthcare to offer rapid, more securely deployed, and easily accessed virtual care solutions.”

GE Healthcare recently launched OnWatch Network Edge to assist customers that consume GE Healthcare’s cloud-hosted services. To rapidly deliver these services to customers without compromising quality of service or security of patient data, GE Healthcare leverages VMware SD-WAN with OnWatch Network Edge. VMware is the first SD-WAN partner to integrate its technology with OnWatch Network Edge in this manner.

“GE Healthcare offers a suite of precision healthcare applications that are both on-premises and cloud-based. OnWatch Network Edge provides an easy way to deploy these large-scale integrations quickly and more securely. VMware’s SD-WAN technology enables reliable deployment of latency-sensitive and data-intensive applications,” said Paul Jones, Global Product Manager for GE Healthcare.

This is not the first time VMware and GE Healthcare have teamed up. GE Healthcare previously integrated VMware’s AIOps solution, Edge Network Intelligence, with its OnWatch Network Performance solution that helps healthcare providers proactively analyze and monitor their enterprise and clinical networks.
