Iridium Communications Inc. announced the service introduction of Iridium Messaging TransportSM (IMTSM), a two-way cloud-native networked data service optimized for use over Iridium Certus® and designed to make it easier to add satellite connections to existing or new IoT solutions.

IMT provides an IP data transport service unique to the Iridium® network, designed for small-to-moderate-sized messages supporting satellite IoT applications. Integrated with Iridium CloudConnect and Amazon Web Services (AWS), the new service can reduce development costs and speed time to market for new Iridium Connected® IoT devices. IMT has been highly anticipated by Iridium’s partner ecosystem and is currently available for the Iridium Certus 100 service with introduction on Iridium Certus 200, 350 and 700 planned for the first quarter of 2023.

As a connectionless messaging service for Iridium CertusTM modules, IMT aligns with current established server-device message constructs using hubs, Pub/Sub or queues, depending on application platforms. The IMT service can be used by a customer application that is ‘store and forward’ or has small amounts of data traffic that does not require a persistent connection between servers, utilizing an Iridium Certus terminal. Whether it’s machine-to-machine (M2M), e-mails, weather updates, transactions, or group communications, IMT enhances two-way messaging to and from anywhere in the world.

IMT is utilized with the Iridium CloudConnect model of server-side message processing, regardless of the underlying over-the-air and ground systems technologies and protocols. The Iridium CloudConnect service combines Iridium IoT capabilities with AWS cloud services extending customers’ IoT reach to the more than 85 percent of the earth that lacks terrestrial coverage. IMT utilizes industry-standard protocols and technology for managing and delivering messages in the cloud, including MQTT, HTTPS and WebSocket (WSS). This makes IMT an easier, faster, and less expensive protocol to develop with, supporting users with countless advantages to design applications that are scalable and easier to distribute to other platforms.

Among the first products built with IMT available are the RockREMOTE by Ground Control and STREAM+ by MetOcean Telematics. The RockREMOTE offers a reliable and flexible solution for industrial IoT applications including oil and gas, mining, utilities and renewables, and transport & cargo. It has a built-in MQTT application that allows developers to submit and receive data payloads across the MQTT protocol. Users can send and receive messages, pictures, to and from anywhere in the world utilizing this IMT implementation over the Iridium Certus 100 service.

Also powered by Iridium Certus 100, STREAM+ allows users to send and receive files and messages securely. Designed for field applications with size, weight, and power constraints, STREAM+ offers a range of industry standard protocols, features, and inputs simplifying integration and installation for end users and reducing development costs and overall time to market.

Also currently working on IMT service-based solutions are Iridium partners Beam CommunicationsBlue Sky NetworkCLS GroupGlobalsat GroupLars Thrane A/S and Zunibal.

“The launch of Iridium Messaging Transport adds another powerful capability to the Iridium Certus portfolio and another value-added service for our partners and the growing IoT market,” said Bryan Hartin, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Iridium. “Our partners are excited about IMT as it will make it faster and easier for them to add Iridium satellite connectivity to new and existing solutions needed across a number of industries.”

Unique in the satellite industry, Iridium Certus is the only broadband service that provides reliable, weather-resilient connectivity for on-the-move internet, high-quality voice, email, live-action video and IoT data transfer. Through its constellation of crosslinked satellites in Low-Earth Orbit (LEO), Iridium is the only communications company that offers truly global coverage and is ideally suited for IoT applications.

Barracuda, announced that customers can now run Crosser Edge Analytics software directly on Barracuda Secure Connector. Barracuda’s scalable IoT hardware connectivity solution running the Crosser node application addresses the need for both secure connectivity in large, distributed environments and accurate analytics at scale.

Modern IoT analytics and edge intelligence solutions depend on the data collected on the edge. Barracuda Secure Connector provides scalable and secure connectivity in industrial IoT environments. With the Crosser Edge application running in a container on Barracuda Secure Connector, data collected at the edge can be aggregated, combined, and prefiltered to reduce the cost for storage and intermittent transmission, and enable effective processing of useful data in an on-premises or cloud analytics platform.

Benefits

When utilizing Crosser on Barracuda products, users can obtain the following advantages:

  • Scalable connectivity to accommodate large and dispersed networks of industrial and IoT devices
  • Transforms raw data and combines more data points without increasing the cost of data
  • Data reduction by removing dirty and irrelevant data
  • Granular control of data sent for remote analytics or received for remote control
  • No additional hardware required for the Crosser rollout as the software is run directly on the edge device

“Maintaining secure connectivity for the large, complex networks necessary to run industrial IoT devices can be challenging for organizations as they scale, and managing the data collected at the edge adds another layer of complexity,” said Klaus Gheri, VP, Network Security, Barracuda. “This combined solution helps address these challenges in a scalable way.”

Use cases

Data cleansing and normalization

A common IoT scenario is collecting data from various sensors and devices, often communicating with different protocols and setups. To be able to use that data, the user must normalize and prepare the data for further processing.

  • Ability to move companies past raw data to being able to explore, compare, and be aware of the data — with standardized metrics and views to bring wide visibility and context to what is currently just digital bits.
  • Allows organizations to harness the power of what are mostly disconnected existing data streams from IoT, IIoT, HMIs, PLCs, CRM, MES, digitized manual data, and partner data, all into one single location.
  • Includes on-premise gateways & connectors to centralize the data and securely send this data to the cloud, and most clients don’t need to add any new hardware or software to their existing environment.
  • Software includes sourcing existing data from Automation, IoT and IIoT, CRM, and other digital captures, and also includes an equipment profile library, equipment modeling, manufacturing process layout, trending, standardized dashboards, and basic limits & notifications.

ThinkIQ’s SaaS Manufacturing cloud-based platform simplifies the creation of web-based applications and leverages the strengths of the Internet of Things, Big Data, Data Science, Semantic Modeling and Machine Learning. The platform collects data across the operation (existing and IIoT sensors) and leverages AI, ML to provide actionable real time insights (e.g., identify correlations and root causes, traceability and yield issues, etc.). It creates a new level of capability beyond what independent disconnected operating environments can provide today.

Anova, the trusted innovator and leader in remote tank telemetry, announced the release of Anova Transcend IoT Platform™, a revolutionary new Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platform for industrial gases producers and distributors. Building on over 30 years of Anova experience and industry expertise,

Anova Transcend reveals broad insights into the industrial gases supply chain by integrating data from multiple monitored tanks and advanced systems into one platform. Users gain deep, instant insight from beautifully visualized data and customizable dashboards displaying information collected from multiple tanks, vaporizers, pipelines, PLCs, and other advanced systems. Built upon the foundation of the most widely used remote telemetry IIoT platform in the industry, and customizable for in-house or end-customer branded users, Anova Transcend already monitors over 70,000 cryogenic tanks and 8,000 advanced systems assets globally, delivering near real-time processing speeds with an intuitive and familiar user experience. Digitizing the industrial gases supply chain at any scale, and with data from any source, has never been easier.

“With Anova Transcend, our customers have the ability to bring together, in one place, key metrics, such as tank level and pressure, along with advanced systems flow rates, ambient temperatures, pressure, and other variables,” says Kevin Lynch, Senior Vice President of Industrial Gases at Anova. “This offers an incredible ability to speed and extend the digitization of the supply chain beyond tanks, painting a more extensive, accurate, and actionable view of the operations.”

“Our Industrial Gases team, led by Kevin Lynch, has developed new, incredible solutions to not only remotely monitor industrial gases tanks, but also adjacent equipment like vaporizers, compressors, pipelines, and PLC’s, enabling enhanced predictive analytics across more of our customers’ businesses. Much of this was borne out of the needs of the past year as our customers requested more IoT solutions to remotely monitor industrial equipment in real-time. With Anova Transcend, our industry can now achieve more far-reaching digitization of supply chains,” says Chet Reshamwala, CEO at Anova.

“Beyond tanks, Anova clients are incorporating remote telemetry of advanced systems to achieve better safety measures, greater process efficiency, address sustainability and meet customer service goals. Beyond providing the performance and scale required for our industry’s complex supply chains, Anova Transcend helps users better visualize data. They can derive faster insight and customize how they view information to better manage their specific operations.”
