Scality has unveiled the latest version of ARTESCA, the industry’s exclusive S3 object storage software featuring CORE5 end-to-end cyber resilience, providing five distinct levels of protection from API to architecture. Now available for the Veeam® Data Platform, ARTESCA 3.0 tackles the increasing threats enterprises face as cybercriminals use AI to launch more sophisticated ransomware attacks.

“Every vendor selling immutable storage claims their solution will make your data ransomware-proof, but it’s clear — immutability is not enough to keep data 100% protected,” said Paul Speciale, chief marketing officer, Scality. “94% of IT leaders rely on immutable storage as a foundational aspect of their cybersecurity strategy. If immutable backups were the answer, then why did ransom payments double in 2023 to more than $1 billion? It’s time that the storage industry goes beyond immutability to deliver end-to-end cyber resilience.”

Beyond immutability with new ARTESCA CORE5 for Veeam
ARTESCA 3.0 is the first object storage software to provide such comprehensive data protection. Scality’s new CORE5 capabilities safeguard data at 5 critical levels from API-to-Architecture for end-to-end cyber resilience:

 1. API-level: Immutability implemented via S3 object lock provides a powerful top-line defense by ensuring backups are immutable the instant they’re created. Strong multi-factor authentication (MFA) and access control help administrators prevent breaches on employees.
 2. Data-level: Multiple layers of data-level security measures are employed to prevent attackers from accessing and exfiltrating stored data
 3. Storage-level: Advanced encoding techniques prevent destruction or exfiltration of backups by rendering stored data indecipherable to attackers, even those using stolen access privileges to bypass higher-level protections.
 4. Geographic-level: Simple and affordable multi-site data copies prevent data loss even if an entire data center is targeted in an attack.
 5. Architecture-level: An intrinsically immutable core architecture ensures data is always preserved in its original form once stored, even if the attacker attains the necessary access privileges to bypass API-level immutability.

“ARTESCA’s CORE5 capabilities set the bar for a new standard of truly cyber-resilient storage in modern data centers. Windows of exposure are effectively eliminated by providing not only the strongest form of data immutability, but also cyber resilience at all levels of the system,” said Speciale. “Together with Veeam, our customers achieve unbreakable data protection.”

Fastest data recovery for Veeam with performance at scale
ARTESCA’s tight integration with Veeam Data Platform provides fast data recovery without suffering performance degradation as data grows.

ARTESCA 3.0 for Veeam is:

 • Veeam Ready validated for Veeam high-performance tier deployments on hybrid and all-flash storage servers at an affordable cost
 • VMware Instant Recovery Ready with ultra-high performance on all-flash servers
 • Simple-to-use compatibility with Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 and Veeam Kasten in a single system
 • Quickly and effortlessly configured as a ransomware-hardened Veeam repository, thanks to its unique built-in Veeam Assistant tool
 • Offered as a turnkey hardware appliance for Veeam with a Quickstart Wizard to simplify integration into network environments

“As the #1 leader in data backup and ransomware recovery, Veeam works closely with our Technology Alliance Partners to advance our mission to keep businesses running,” said Andreas Neufert, vice president of product management, alliances at Veeam “This latest version of Scality ARTESCA enhances the capabilities of Veeam Data Platform, fortifying immutable backups and strengthening cyber resilience for our joint customers. When enterprises become the victim of cyber attacks, the ability to rapidly recover critical, clean data is paramount to ensure business continuity and minimal downtime. We’re excited to continue our partnership with Scality and extend this enhanced level of cyber resilience to enterprises.”

New capabilities in ARTESCA 3.0 with CORE5 cyber resilience
CORE5 cyber resilience goes beyond baseline immutability to render backup storage truly unbreakable against ransomware and malware attacks. The latest version of ARTESCA includes:

 • Design in accordance with US Executive Order 14028 Improving the Nation’s Cybersecurity and zero-trust architecture principles, including enforced authentication and end-to-end encryption of data.
 • Multi-factor authentication (MFA) for admin users that can now be globally enforced to provide additional login protection for admins and data managers
 • Integration with Microsoft Active Directory (AD), configurable directly through the secure ARTESCA administrative UI.
 • Center for Internet Security (CIS) compliance testing through OpenSCAP project tools for continual conformance with CIS cybersecurity recommendations, including password strength compliance based on length, complexity and history.
 • Extended security-hardening of the integrated OS that disallows root access including remote shell or su as root; admin access is only granted through a system-defined artesca-os user identity adhering to the principle of least privileges.
 • A software bill of materials (SBOM) of components and suppliers, scanned and continuously patched for CVEs, to provide customers with visibility into their software supply chain, and automated OS updates to quickly patch vulnerabilities.
 • Increased growth to 8.5PB of usable capacity, with support for leading high-density servers from an even wider choice of storage hardware and broadened support for multiple types of flash drives.
 • Assured high data durability for high-density flash drives and HDD with enhanced dual-level erasure-coding.

Easy deployment options
ARTESCA 3.0 object storage software is designed to be deployed quickly, with three on-premise solutions to suit your needs:

 • Turnkey hardware appliance for Veeam built on Supermicro servers
 • Software on your preferred industry-standard servers
 • Virtual appliance for VMware-powered data centers

Scality released findings from a survey conducted among 500 IT decision-makers in France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The aim was to understand the significance of immutable data storage within an organization’s broader cybersecurity approach.

Immutable data storage survey key findings reveal:

 • 94% either already rely on immutable data storage or plan to implement it within the next 12 months, and an additional 2% plan to deploy it within the next three years.
 • 69% consider immutable data storage essential to their corporate cybersecurity.
 • Only 12% of those who deployed immutable data storage say it is not essential to cybersecurity.

Results from the independent survey by Vanson Bourne demonstrate that IT leaders consider immutable storage as a must-have in the fight against cyberattacks. Ransomware threats are now understood by organizations to be inevitable. Reports show 1 in 4 organizations that pay a ransom never get their data back, and just 16% are able to recover without paying a ransom.

This reinforces the role immutable data storage plays as an essential last line of defense within a cybersecurity toolkit. With immutable storage, data cannot be deleted or modified once written, increasing data safety and ensuring organizations have the power to restore data with 100% accuracy in the event of a breach.

Survey insights: Vertical market and regional nuances
Comparisons among IT leaders surveyed across vertical industries and specific countries reveal a number of notable differences:

Vertical market:

 • Manufacturing organizations (95%) are most likely to deploy immutable storage. 84% consider it essential to their corporate cybersecurity.
 • Financial services firms (74%) report the lowest reliance on immutable storage. 60% say it’s essential to their corporate cybersecurity.

Regional:

 • A majority of IT leaders across all regions currently use or plan to use immutable data storage: The U.S. has the highest level of current or planned immutable data storage deployments, with 98% of respondents either having implemented it or planning to do so within the next year. This is followed by France at 96%, Germany at 94% and the U.K. at 85%.

While a relatively low number (12%) of IT leaders worldwide who currently use immutable data storage do not regard it as “essential” to their cybersecurity strategy, a larger percentage resides in the U.K.: 24% of U.K. respondents have deployed it but say it is not essential to their cybersecurity, compared to 11% in France, 9% in the U.S. and 6% in Germany.

“Widespread deployment of immutable storage reinforces an increased awareness of the critical role secure backup plays as an active defense against cyberattacks, specifically coupled with immutable backup data. Veeam believes that achieving Zero Trust Data Resilience with immutable storage implementations — that are indeed truly immutable — is a great opportunity for IT leaders to reduce the risk of growing data security threats and improve their overall cyber resilience.” Dave Russell; VP of enterprise strategy, Veeam Software

Does traditional immutable storage still leave a window of exposure?
The survey reveals the criticality of immutable storage at a time of evolving industry dialogue about data cybersecurity best practices and technologies. But it’s important to note that not all immutability is created equal — some forms still leave a window of exposure.

Unlike forms of immutability enabled by traditional solutions (such as NAS/file system snapshots, dedupe appliances, Linux-hardened repositories or tape), true object storage solutions are inherently immutable at the core architecture level.

The system implements proper protocols and true object storage semantics to preserve data in its original form the very moment it is written — which is not the case for other immutable solutions that can introduce time delays before data is immutable. Each object, even those written nanoseconds apart, can never be overwritten, deleted, or modified. This architectural reinforcement provides a crucial last line of defense against ransomware attackers’ attempts to encrypt data and extort victims.

“Immutable data storage is an insurance policy against ransomware. While the survey data shows IT leaders resoundingly agree that immutability is a cornerstone of cybersecurity strategy, 31% still did not report it as essential. Here’s the reality: Being able to restore quickly from an immutable backup means the difference between a successful and unsuccessful ransomware attack. Without storage that’s truly immutable, you’re vulnerable to cybercriminals’ demands. The perception among some respondents that it’s not essential to cybersecurity is misguided and represents an opportunity to shift more IT leaders towards achieving a modern, inherently immutable object storage solution as a much-needed last line of defense to keep data locked and immune to ransomware exfiltration, modification or destruction.” Paul Speciale; CMO, Scality
The survey was recently conducted by global technology market research firm Vanson Bourne across several industries, including manufacturing, telecom, professional services, financial services, and retail. Respondents were asked: “Is immutable data storage an essential element of your organization’s corporate cybersecurity strategy?” To qualify, each respondent carried a manager or above title in an enterprise-sized commercial organization with over 1,000 employees and is primarily employed in the IT function.

Key findings in the U.S.:

 1. 98% of U.S. respondents currently rely on immutable storage or plan to implement it within 12 months. This is the highest of the four regions surveyed (U.S., U.K., France, Germany).
 2. 79% of U.S. respondents across all vertical markets consider immutable storage essential to their corporate cybersecurity strategy.
 3. 86% of U.S. manufacturing organizations consider immutable storage essential to their corporate cybersecurity strategy. This is the highest among the sectors surveyed in the U.S., followed by the IT, technology, and telecoms sectors at 84%.

Key findings in France:

 1. 96% of French respondents currently rely on immutable storage or plan to implement it within 12 months. This is second only to the U.S., at 98%.
 2. 69% of French respondents across all vertical markets consider immutable storage essential to their corporate cybersecurity strategy.
 3. 90% of French manufacturing organizations consider immutable storage essential to their corporate cybersecurity strategy. This is the highest score among all sectors surveyed in France.
 4. 43% of French businesses and professional services consider immutable storage essential to their corporate cybersecurity strategy. This is the lowest score among all sectors surveyed in France.

Key findings in Germany:

 1. 94% of German respondents currently rely on immutable storage or plan to implement it within 12 months.
 2. 74% of German respondents across all vertical markets consider immutable storage essential to their corporate cybersecurity strategy.
 3. 76% of German respondents from organizations with 3,000 or more employees say that storage immutability is essential to their corporate cybersecurity strategy.
 4. 69% of German respondents from organizations with between 1,000 and 2,999 employees say that storage immutability is essential to their corporate cybersecurity strategy.

Key findings in the U.K.:

 1. 85% of U.K. respondents currently rely on immutable storage or plan to implement it within 12 months. This is the lowest of the four regions (U.S., U.K., France, Germany).
 2. 47% of U.K. respondents across all vertical markets consider immutable storage essential to their corporate cybersecurity strategy.
 3. 54% of U.K. respondents in the IT, technology and telecoms sector deploy and consider immutable storage essential to their corporate cybersecurity strategy. This is the highest score among all sectors surveyed in the U.K.

]]>
Scality announced its data storage predictions for 2023, capping a year of unprecedented ransomware attacks and unstructured data growth that complicate the work of IT teams to run efficient enterprise computing resources. In the present economic climate of higher costs and geopolitical uncertainty, Scality’s forecast considers how big data storage solutions will evolve to meet these challenges, including how data security will remain a key storage industry driver, and how the Three I’s — intelligent features, innovation, and integration — present new hope for data center efficiency and effectiveness.

“Data security considerations have always been top of mind for our customers, but in 2023, IT leaders will evaluate every solution, including data storage, by its ability to protect data from the multiplicity of threat vectors. In 2022 the data storage industry evolved to embrace advances in AI/ML, hybrid clouds and edge computing that enabled greater data sovereignty and flexibility. In 2023, the pace will accelerate so IT teams will obtain long-promised features that deliver a significant uptick in efficiency.” said Paul Speciale; Scality Chief Marketing Officer.

Data Security:

 • Security will dominate IT buying criteria, including for data storage. Supply chain issues and economic challenges will continue to impact storage projects in 2023 — the exception being those that can show tangible ROI on ransomware protection initiatives. This will present an opportunity for big data storage solutions with the intelligence to address current gaps in multi-level security, detection and data immutability for ransomware protection and fast business recoverability. Moreover, solutions that can provide AI-based anomaly-detection capabilities for detecting ransomware attacks will become more mainstream in the near future.

Intelligence:

Unstructured search gets smart with multi-cloud capabilities and rich feature sets.

 • Customers need intelligent data search methods to optimize data analytics and mining of the trillions of unstructured data objects they have aggregated in object storage solutions. In 2022 cloud vendors such as Amazon and others made a step in the right direction by introducing a myriad of search tools and services. But there remains an unmet need for intelligence that allows the all-important “aha!” moment to arrive far faster.
 • We predict that in 2023 search and query capabilities for unstructured data storage solutions will mature, and vendors will integrate them with standard access methods, while still guaranteeing enterprise-class security and auditing. This will prove doubly advantageous in simplifying application development and allowing object storage resources to serve as the single solution for unstructured data storage and query.

Malicious software supply chain attacks will slow open-source adoption.

 • Malware and ransomware attacks have ballooned such that intrusions now occur every few minutes across the globe, costing businesses millions of dollars per incident and consuming untold IT cycles. We have already witnessed compromised security in commercial software solutions as seen in recent high profile attacks. Open-source software dependencies will become an increasing threat vector, causing enterprises to more carefully evaluate and vet these technologies before employing them at scale.

Innovation:

As recession concerns loom, green storage innovation will rise in importance.

 • We are experiencing a convergence of increased awareness on climate change and an extended economic downturn. These forces will cause enterprises to refocus their IT budgets on solutions that can deliver savings and ROI in operational costs through reduced power consumption.
 • The data storage industry has already focused attention in this area, as witnessed by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) Green Storage Initiative that aims at standards for lower power consumption from large-scale data storage systems. Vendor offerings will emerge with innovations that reduce power consumption through smart resource utilization and use of the latest low-power and high storage density platforms. This will provide measurable savings in power consumption and cooling to reduce environmental impact from storage.

Integration:

Tighter integration of managed cloud services and object storage will emerge.

 • Application vendors will publish their own extended storage APIs for enhanced monitoring, reporting, performance acceleration and optimal data placement. This will be embraced by leading object storage solutions to deliver even more compelling solutions and ROI for enterprise and mid-market customers in data protection (backup and ransomware protection), big data analytics and AI/ML.In addition, because customers value cloud-like storage services but show a preference for them from the comfort of their own data center infrastructure, we will see increasing partnerships between object storage vendors and large OEMs or managed service providers (MSPs) to provide fully integrated, private-cloud S3 storage-as-a-service offerings.

Scality announced that Melissa Lyons, a repeat CRN Women of the Channel honoree, has joined the team as senior director of channels for Americas. Lyons joins Scality to support the rapidly expanding U.S. channel and alliance partners business, which has grown 42% year over year. Scality® storage propels companies to unify data management no matter where data lives — from edge to core to cloud.

With focus on the channel, Scality is doubling down on efforts in this area in 2022. Melissa Lyons comes to the company with extensive experience in the channel, including her most recent role as regional channel manager at OutSystems. She also served as global channel manager for Sophos, following the company’s acquisition of Astaro, and as senior manager of Turbonomic, where she grew the company’s partner program to more than 400 partners worldwide.
