Four new trends in cloud computing are continuing to expand the breadth of cloud offerings and capabilities, accelerating growth across all segments in the public cloud services market, according to Gartner, Inc. The four trends are: cloud ubiquity, regional cloud ecosystems, sustainability and carbon-intelligent cloud, and cloud infrastructure and platform service (CIPS) providers’ automated programmable infrastructure.

“The economic, organizational and societal impact of the pandemic will continue to serve as a catalyst for digital innovation and adoption of cloud services,” said Henrique Cecci, senior research director at Gartner. “This is especially true for use cases such as collaboration, remote work and new digital services to support a hybrid workforce.”

Cloud Ubiquity

Today, the cloud underpins most new technological disruptions, including composable business, and has proven itself during times of uncertainty with its resiliency, scalability, flexibility and speed. Hybrid, multicloud and edge environments are growing and setting the stage for new distributed cloud models. In addition, new wireless communications advances, such as 5G R16 and R17, will push cloud adoption to a new level of broader, deeper and ubiquitous usage. Use cases such as enhanced mobile banking experiences and healthcare transformation will also emerge.

As a result, global cloud adoption will continue to expand rapidly. Gartner forecasts end-user spending on public cloud services to reach $396 billion in 2021 and grow 21.7% to reach $482 billion in 2022 (see Table 1). Additionally, by 2026, Gartner predicts public cloud spending will exceed 45% of all enterprise IT spending, up from less than 17% in 2021.

Table 1. Worldwide Public Cloud Services End-User Spending Forecast (Millions of U.S. Dollars)

  2020 2021 2022
Cloud Business Process Services (BPaaS) 46,066 51,027 55,538
Cloud Application Infrastructure Services (PaaS) 58,917 80,002 100,636
Cloud Application Services (SaaS) 120,686 145,509 171,915
Cloud Management and Security Services 22,664 25,987 29,736
Cloud System Infrastructure Services (IaaS) 64,286 91,543 121,620
Desktop as a Service (DaaS) 1,235 2,079 2,710
Total Market 313,853 396,147 482,155

BPaaS = business process as a service; IaaS = infrastructure as a service; PaaS = platform as a service; SaaS = software as a service

“Organizations are advancing their timelines on digital business initiatives and moving rapidly to the cloud in an effort to modernize environments, improve system reliability, support hybrid work models and address other new realities compelled by the pandemic,” said Brandon Medford, senior principal analyst at Gartner.

Regional Cloud Ecosystems

Growing geopolitical regulatory fragmentation, protectionism and industry compliance are driving the creation of new regional and vertical cloud ecosystems and data services. Companies in the financial and public sectors are looking to reduce critical lock-in and single points of failure with their cloud providers outside of their country.

Regions not able to create or sustain their own platform ecosystems will have no choice but to leverage the platforms created in other regions and resort to legislation and regulation to maintain some level of control and sovereignty. Concerns among politicians, academia and tech providers in these regions are increasing, leading to initiatives such as GAIA-X in European countries.

Sustainability and “Carbon-Intelligent” Cloud

Nearly half of the respondents in the 2021 Gartner CEO Survey believe climate change mitigation will have a significant impact on their business. Cloud providers are responding to this growing focus on sustainability by instituting more aggressive carbon-neutral corporate goals, which creates new challenges for infrastructure and operations (I&O) leaders.

“New sustainability requirements will be mandated over the next few years and the choice of cloud services providers may hinge on the provider’s ‘green’ initiatives,” said Cecci.

CIPS Providers’ Automated Programmable Infrastructure

Gartner expects the broad adoption of fully managed and artificial intelligence (AI)-/machine-learning (ML)-enabled cloud services from hyperscale CIPS providers. This will rapidly eliminate the operational burden of traditional I&O roles in the public cloud.

“Infrastructure is becoming programmable, and its operation is subsequently becoming automated,” said Cecci. “Modern IT infrastructure, whether deployed in the data center or consumed in the public cloud, requires less manual intervention and routine administration than its legacy equivalents.”

Censys, announced a new Cloud Security Offering, including cloud storage bucket discovery and risk analysis, daily asset scanning, and a centralized and complete cloud inventory across all your cloud providers as part of the Censys Attack Surface Management Platform security offering.

Data breaches have become an increasingly commonplace incident in the modern enterprise, and the role of the cloud in its growing prevalence is undeniable.

“We recently analyzed our own Universal Internet DataSet and found million database exposures across the most common cloud providers, as well as 1.9 million RDP exposures,” said Censys’ Security Research Lead, Megan DeBlois. “We know that database exposures lead to data breaches, and past research has shown that RDP accounts for 70-80% of network breaches.”

Increasing concern from customers and our internal research pushed Censys to address the underlying lack of cloud visibility that is causing these risks. Many of our customers used CSPM, CASB, and CWPP platforms, but these only monitor known cloud accounts. Customers can now continually discover cloud assets and risks ranging from unknown cloud accounts and providers to unmanaged cloud storage buckets, thereby eliminating security blindspots and resolving some of the Internet’s most alarming risks.

Daily Discovery of Cloud Providers, Accounts, and Cloud Storage Buckets at Scale

Censys Cloud Security is a big step toward addressing modern security concerns. Censys now harnesses its industry-leading asset discovery capabilities in combination with cloud provider integrations such as AWS, Azure, GCP to ensure multi-cloud visibility. Censys combines data obtained from these methods to provide a single unified asset inventory containing both known and potentially unknown Internet-facing cloud assets. Unlike competitors, Censys also addresses the ephemeral nature of cloud assets with twice daily scans of the top 100 IPv4 ports.

“Most Fortune 500 companies have hundreds of cloud accounts. While some are managed through cloud security tools, many are simultaneously created by non-IT groups and don’t have technical controls to prevent a breach,” said Censys Co-Founder Zakir Durumeric. “Security teams are left with a huge environment to protect, but are blind to many of their riskiest accounts.”

Unmanaged cloud accounts  can contain an organization’s riskiest assets. “One of our customers thought they had just 800 hosts in their attack surface, but after connecting their AWS accounts to Censys Cloud Security, we inventoried a total of 1,439 – nearly an 80% increase. This discovery revealed 60 exposed protocols and end-of-life software risks on otherwise unknown assets,” said Durumeric. “In order to maintain compliance and avoid security breaches, it is imperative to have comprehensive and continual cloud asset discovery for all assets regardless of the cloud account or provider.”

In addition, discovery of new cloud asset types such as storage buckets have provided immediate value to customers. “A significant problem that remains is dealing with data loss from misconfigured databases and buckets, which has resulted in numerous data loss events over the years,” said Derek Abdine, CTO at Censys. “Censys has added storage bucket discovery after overwhelming demand from customers. After switching on the feature with one customer, we found 18 exposed buckets, one with a completely configurable access control list. That means anyone on the Internet could have changed the settings and accessed the data.”

Using Censys Cloud Security, teams can finally get full visibility of their cloud footprint across all providers and deployment models, reduce their attackable surface area by shutting down shadow IT, and meet compliance objectives in the cloud.

Trend Micro Incorporated announced the AWS Marketplace debut of its answer to the needs of organizations building in the cloud on Amazon Web Services (AWS). A comprehensive platform, referred to as Trend Micro Cloud One, designed to protect across leading cloud-based environments with services designed for applications, network, workloads, file storage, containers and cloud security posture management.

“We applaud Trend Micro for building security services suited for buyers who innovate on AWS and participate in the shared responsibility model,” said Kamlesh Talreja, General Manager, AWS Marketplace, AWS. “AWS Marketplace is the first cloud marketplace to offer Trend Micro Cloud One, enabling developers to access the flexible pricing, customizable contracts, and rapid deployment they need.”

According to Gartner, “Enterprises are increasingly implementing hybrid data center architectures, with workloads spanning on-premises and public cloud IaaS providers and, increasingly, container-based implementations leveraging serverless functions. However, elastic, cloud-native-style applications have unique security requirements that are quite different from end-user-facing systems. To securely embrace the opportunities of public cloud and to support the speed and dynamism of cloud environments, workload protection solutions designed to meet these requirements should be used.”

Many companies today have at least some presence in the cloud, including moving towards containers and serverless deployments.

“AWS and Trend Micro got this seamless integration right. We can now focus on innovating while having confidence that Cloud One’s security is provisioned automatically with an audit trail for each instance of malware and vulnerability detection and integrity monitoring. Cloud One gives us the breadth and depth of services and the flexibility to switch on the functionality we need, when we need it,” said MJ DiBerardino, CEO, Cloudnexa.

Trend Micro mirrors the self-service, pay-as-you-go procurement model offered by AWS. This simplifies everything related to cloud builds from volume negotiation to API integrations. Customers have the investment benefit of security flexibility as application designs evolve over time with the assurance not to overburden the organization’s security teams.

“AWS Marketplace makes it easy for users to get the right tools for the job at hand. This new listing allows users to easily get the security tools they need for the applications they are building in the cloud,” said Trend Micro COO, Kevin Simzer.  “Regardless of an organization’s structure or existing cloud footprint, our cloud services simplify the protection of everything being built in the cloud, while ensuring necessary regulatory compliance.”

Future-proofing a business investment is a key decision that will benefit security teams, developers and procurement teams alike. As digital transformation continues, this procurement motion provides the flexibility to use as much of each service as needed, whenever it is needed, without managing multiple subscriptions. This is the true platform procurement experience.

A prime example is the Avertra MiCustomer solution, an integrated application suite which their clients can use on the IBM Cloud to manage all aspects of customer engagement, from the initial meter reading to final bill payment. This process includes invoicing, correspondence, automated back office exception resolution, and analytics – all based on a single unified platform designed to streamline operations to help reduce internal costs for E&U companies. The solution is also designed to give control to consumers, allowing them to keep tabs on their energy usage, predict future usage and have oversight into their overall utility spend, along with other real-time features that support a simpler and more personalized customer experience.

“We view this collaboration as a natural extension of our expanding work with IBM. To date, we’ve had great success using IBM Watson, and now with IBM Cloud we’ll be able to improve the scalability of our secured digital solutions to help build more connected E&U organizations supported by IBM’s services. Our mission is to ‘simplify life,’ and we view our IBM collaboration as a way to simplify how we manage our critical digital assets. We look forward to the next stage in our journey with IBM,” says Bashir Bseirani, CEO at Avertra.

Avertra is part of IBM’s hybrid cloud ecosystem, an initiative to support global system integrators and independent software vendors to help clients manage and modernize workloads for any cloud environment, including the IBM public cloud. The IBM public cloud is the industry’s most secure and open public cloud for business. With its security leadership, enterprise-grade capabilities and support for open-source technologies, the IBM public cloud is designed to differentiate and extend on hybrid cloud capabilities for enterprise workloads.

“We are seeing the energy and utilities industry accelerating its cloud adoption, particularly to improve communication, function and accessibility to meet the demands of increasingly digitally-native consumers,” said Evaristus Mainsah, General Manager, IBM Hybrid Cloud and Edge Ecosystem. “Through IBM’s Cloud Engagement Fund, we’re making it easier for ecosystem partners like Avertra to build secured, integrated cloud solutions by migrating their workloads to an open hybrid cloud environment like IBM Cloud – bringing the value of multicloud applications to their E&U clients.”

From increasing demand for innovation in renewable energy to giving consumers more on-demand insight into their energy usage, utility providers can turn to hybrid cloud solutions to help address the needs of a more sustainability-focused, digital society.

As part of its focus on simplifying hybrid architecture mobility, Pure Storage announced two new offerings to make it easier than ever for enterprises to consume and deploy storage – the availability of Pure as-a-ServiceTM in AWS Marketplace and a new Cloud Block Store Efficiency Guarantee program backed by Pure’s promise to reduce cloud storage consumption with no feature trade-offs.

Pure Storage works with AWS to drive applications that run across AWS Regions and AWS Outposts and leverage the agility and innovation of private, edge, SaaS and clouds simultaneously. Today’s announcements are the latest innovations that reinforce how Pure and AWS work together to serve customers’ modern data needs.

Pure as-a-Service helps enterprises get the value of cloud economics, operational excellence and an outstanding customer experience in a “pay as you go” flexible model. This allows organizations to place capacity and performance in locations that make sense to the business, utilizing a single unified subscription whether on-premises, in a colocation facility, or in the cloud. With availability in AWS Marketplace, AWS customers can now deploy Pure as-a-Service capacity in locations that service cloud, on-premises and edge workloads.

“Customers are looking for flexibility and choice as they procure, store, and manage their data across the enterprise as part of a comprehensive digitization initiative,” said Garth Fort, Director of Product Management, AWS Marketplace, Amazon Web Services, Inc. “We are delighted to welcome Pure Storage to offer our shared customers enhanced flexibility, mobility and consistency between on-premises and edge applications to AWS storage.”

“Working with Pure Storage and AWS is an essential part of our business, and today’s announcements are a strong demonstration of their value together,” said Lance Broderick, Director of Technology Finance and Enterprise Architect, NuSkin. “We can see the power of Pure as-a-Service on the AWS marketplace for our on-prem and edge workloads.”

New Cloud Efficiency Guarantee

Also announced today, Pure’s Cloud Efficiency Guarantee program allows customers to take advantage of Cloud Block Store in a risk-free manner with guaranteed cloud operational cost savings. Customers can rely on Pure’s Cloud Block Store to achieve specific efficiency gains over and above what they had with cloud-native storage options, backed by Pure as-a-Service credit guarantees.

“Pure and AWS share a commitment to customer obsession – focused on the cloud principles of agility and flexibility to deliver best of breed technology for customers in our respective areas,” said Michael Sotnick, Vice President, Global Alliances, Pure Storage. “Having a hybrid architecture strategy and the right technology partners helps enterprises achieve more than ever in today’s environment.”

Pure Portfolio and AWS Outposts Ready Designation

  • Pure’s unified fast file and object solution, FlashBlade®, achieved the AWS Outposts Ready designation in September. Fully tested and supported, FlashBlade for AWS Outposts delivers a hybrid cloud solution with all-flash performance, cloud scalability and operational simplicity to accelerate modern applications, support cloud native application development and break down IT silos. This combination is the industry’s first portfolio of modern block, fast file and object storage that is AWS Outposts Ready, ensuring simplified and proven deployment options for customers and partners.
  • FlashArray recently achieved AWS Outposts Ready designation as part of the AWS Service Ready Program. Pure Storage FlashArray® has been tested for ease of deployment, performance and high availability, and is approved by AWS to run alongside Outposts in customer and partner data centers. Now, FlashArray provides AWS Outposts customers with enterprise class, 100% NVMe all-flash block storage to address traditional enterprise databases, low latency and local data processing applications on premises consistent with AWS services, APIs and tools in the cloud.
  • Additionally, Portworx by Pure Storage achieved the AWS Outposts Ready designation enabling Kubernetes applications to run across AWS Regions and AWS Outposts for maximum flexibility.

Portworx by Pure Storage, announced its qualification and support of Portworx Enterprise for Google Cloud’s Anthos on bare metal, a step which enables Anthos users to take full advantage of the Portworx product portfolio on existing enterprise infrastructure while also modernizing applications throughout its lifecycle. Portworx by Pure Storage helps Anthos realize a world where applications can run anywhere using a single management system.

The qualification expands Pure’s vision and portfolio of solutions to enable cloud transformation and provide customers with what matters the most — reliability, resilience, economics, security, performance, and operational simplicity. Pure Storage has multiple offerings that are qualified as Anthos Ready, including Pure FlashArray and Pure FlashBlade, as well as Portworx Enterprise, both already available for Anthos running on-premises. These solutions address performance, availability, disaster recovery, data protection, and storage challenges associated with Kubernetes rollouts. Now users of Anthos on bare metal who subscribe to Portworx will have access to Portworx’s fully integrated solution on Kubernetes on bare metal servers.

“Portworx’s support for Anthos on bare metal provides our customers with a new choice when it comes to reducing the cost and clutter of managing hundreds to thousands of containers,” said Murli Thirumale, General Manager, Cloud Native Business Unit, Pure Storage. “Now, mission-critical applications can run with lower latency and greater performance. Anthos on bare metal servers extends Anthos to edge locations and brings Portworx’s data services capabilities with it.”

“Deploying Anthos on bare metal servers gives customers more options and control over where they run their mission-critical applications,” said Rayn Veerubhotla, Director, Partner Engineering at Google Cloud. “Our partnership with Portworx ensures customers can continue to use the container-based storage solutions they know and trust, while retaining their existing infrastructure for locally optimized performance and latency.”

Anthos on bare metal delivers the best in performance and flexibility without the added costs of switching hardware infrastructure. Anthos customers have direct control over application scale, security, network latency, and containerized applications (GKE). Additionally, Anthos on bare metal users receive the added benefits of lowered cost, monitored application deployment, high-availability, secure design/control, flexible hardware/OS, and load balancing.

Cloudian announced that Green Cloud, a VMware Cloud Provider Partner (VCPP), will begin offering new services built on Cloudian’s object storage platform. The Cloudian solution enables VMware Cloud Providers to deliver S3-based storage services that leverage Cloudian’s limitless scalability, cost-effectiveness and rich feature set.

Green Cloud is one of the largest independent, channel-only IaaS providers in the U.S., with an innovative portfolio of infrastructure, backup and disaster recovery solutions. To provide additional value to customers, the company decided to launch new offerings, starting with Secure Object Storage. A top priority was finding a highly scalable, cost-effective storage platform that would also be a good backup target for Veeam and protect against ransomware.

“Cloudian HyperStore was recommended as an ideal object storage platform for meeting our needs, and after evaluating it ourselves, we agreed. It can scale to an exabyte without interruption and integrates seamlessly with our solution vendors, like VMware,” said Terry Morrison, CTO at Green Cloud

Other HyperStore benefits include limitless, modular capacity growth, multi-tenancy, fully native S3 API compatibility and substantial cost savings over traditional storage solutions.

“Green Cloud is a great example of how our Cloud Provider partners can capture new opportunities and deliver greater value to their customers with Cloudian’s object storage solution,” said Jim Aluotto, Sr. Director Americas Cloud Provider Sales at VMware.

“Through our collaboration with VMware, we’re enabling cloud service providers to build new value-add offerings that address their customers’ evolving data management and protection needs. By doing so, these service providers can develop profitable new revenue streams and grow their business,” said Jon Toor, chief marketing officer at Cloudian.

In addition to its recently launched Secure Object Storage offering, Green Cloud will soon be rolling out its new Secure Backup-as-a-Service, again leveraging the Cloudian platform.
